Choosing a speargun, and the rules here

Types

• Band guns: powered by rubber bands. The most popular: simple, quiet and easy to maintain. Wood, aluminum or carbon barrels.
• Pneumatic guns: powered by compressed air inside the gun. Compact and powerful for their length, with more parts to maintain.
• Pole spears and Hawaiian slings: the simplest. Great for learning and for lionfish.

Length

Match the length to where you hunt. Shorter guns are easier to swing around reefs and holes and in lower visibility. Longer guns reach farther in open, clear water.

Parts that wear

Bands, shooting line, tips and shafts wear out with use and sun. We carry replacements and we service spearguns: spearfishing & freediving.

Safety

• Treat it like a loaded firearm. Never point it at anyone, loaded or not.
• Load it only in the water, and unload it before you get out.
• Know what’s behind your fish before you shoot.

The rules in Puerto Rico

• Freediving only. Recreational fishers may not use a speargun and scuba at the same time. Lionfish have their own rules (lionfish guide).
• Not at night. No spearfishing from sunset to sunrise, except lionfish.
• Not near shore. No spearfishing within 100 ft of the coast, and the gun stays unloaded inside that zone.
• Not in these places: piers and docks, rivers, estuaries and reservoirs, swimming areas, marine reserves and artificial reefs (lionfish have exceptions).
• No spearing lobster.
• License. A DRNA recreational fishing license is required from age 13.
