Freediving in Puerto Rico, on one breath

Long-blade fins, low-volume masks, freediving suits, weights and computers, fitted when you buy at our Bayamón shop, near San Juan. We don’t teach freediving, but we’ll point you to instructors who do.

Freediving: the basics

  • Get trained first. A freediving course teaches breath-hold safety, equalizing and how to help a buddy who blacks out.
  • Never alone. One up, one down: a trained buddy watches you from the surface on every dive.
  • Don’t hyperventilate. It makes you feel like you can stay down longer, and that raises the risk of blacking out.
  • Weight for the surface. Never heavy at the top. Aim to be neutral around 10 m (33 ft), on a quick-release belt.
  • Equalize early and often. Never force it. If it won’t clear, come up.
  • Check the sea. The water is warm all year, but the north coast gets bigger swells in winter. See the wave forecast.

These are reminders, not training. Learn with a certified freediving instructor.
