How much weight do I need?
A starting point for how much weight to bring. It is only an estimate: always finish with a buoyancy check before your dive.

Then do a buoyancy check
- At the surface, in full gear, with a normal breath held and your BCD empty.
- You should float with the water at about eye level.
- When you breathe out, you should start to sink slowly.
- Near the end of the dive your tank is lighter, so check you can hold your safety stop.
Too much weight is as much of a problem as too little. Log what works for you and adjust from there.
Then check it in the water
- At the surface with a full breath, you should float comfortably.
- Aim to be neutral at around 10 m (33 ft): not sinking, not floating up. Shallower than that, you should float.
- Never be heavy at the surface. If you sink there, take weight off.
- Use a quick-release belt, and always freedive with a buddy watching from the surface: one up, one down.
Freediving weight depends mostly on your suit, and on how your body floats. Start light and add a little at a time. Freediving and spearfishing gear
