Try scuba diving in Puerto Rico.

Your first breaths underwater, with a PADI instructor beside you. About 3 hours from a protected beach in San Juan or Vega Alta: a short briefing, skills practice in shallow water until you’re comfortable, then a guided dive on the reef. No experience needed.

At a glance

How your first dive works

  1. A short briefing on the beach. The basics of scuba: just enough to get you underwater and keep you safe.
  2. Skills practice in shallow water. In 3–5 ft of calm water, your instructor shows you how to breathe from the regulator, clear water from your mask and find the air if you need it. You practise until you’re comfortable. There’s no rush.
  3. A guided dive. Your instructor leads you on the reef, no deeper than 30 ft, to see fish and marine life up close. The dive lasts as long as the air in your tank.

Why try it with us

  • The official PADI program, taught by a PADI instructor at a PADI 5 Star Dive Center.
  • Real practice before the dive. About 3 hours, so the skills come first and you feel ready before we go deeper.
  • Small groups. Up to 4 people, so your instructor has time for you.
  • Gear that fits. We’re a dive shop: your mask, fins and BCD are sized to you.
  • Photos and video. If you’d like, we often bring a camera and share the footage with you, free. Our attention stays on you, not the camera.

Before you come

  • Fill in the diver medical questionnaire and bring it with you: download it in English (PDF) or en español (PDF). If it says you need a physician’s evaluation, bring your doctor’s signed approval. For anyone under 18, a parent or guardian signs.
  • Bring: swimsuit, towel, sun protection and a change of clothes. There are no restrooms at the site, so plan a stop before you arrive.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early at the meeting point in your confirmation email.
  • Flying home soon? Allow at least 12 hours after a single dive before you fly.

Diving with family or friends?

Certified friends or family can join the dive with you. Choose “Certified Scuba Diver” when you book, and bring proof of certification.

Children aged 8 and 9 can try PADI Bubble Maker, in water no deeper than 6 ft. More for parents.

Loved it?

The next step is the PADI Open Water Diver course: eLearning at home, then 2 days in the water, and you’re certified to dive anywhere in the world.

Discover Scuba questions

Do I need any experience or certification?

No. Discover Scuba is made for people who have never dived. You need to be at least 10, in general good health and comfortable in the water.

How much does Discover Scuba cost?

From $150 per person, plus tax. All the scuba gear you need is included.

How deep will I go?

You practise skills in 3–5 ft of water first. The guided dive goes no deeper than 30 ft.

How long does it take?

About 3 hours in total, including the briefing, skills practice and the dive.

Is this a certification?

No. It’s a supervised first experience. To dive on your own with a buddy, take the PADI Open Water Diver course.

Does it count toward Open Water?

It can. Ask us when you book Open Water. We usually recommend doing the full skills practice again anyway: the more you practise, the better diver you become.

Can I do it if I’m pregnant?

Scuba diving is not recommended during pregnancy.

When can I fly after diving?

Allow at least 12 hours after a single dive, and at least 18 hours after repeated or multi-day diving.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If we cancel because of weather or something else outside our control, you choose: a full refund, or a new date at no extra cost. Read the full policy.
